If you've never been to a poetry slam, expect noise and all the feels, according to the new slam master for Hear Here Poetry Mallory Everhart.
"Slam poetry is a vibrant and vital counter culture community dedicated to highlighting marginalized voices," she said.
We sat down with Everhart for a deep dive into the Colorado Springs slam poetry scene.
Q: Can we call you Slam Ma'am? Slam Ma'am, Slam Master, whatever works! Just don't call me late to dinner! ;)
Q: What role does slam play in the Colorado Springs community? In Colorado Springs specifically, we showcase the voices of women, people of color, and queer folk. We are working to create a conversation within our venue and outside our walls by empowering people of all stripes to speak their truth. This pushes back at the dominating narrative of our town and creates an awareness of the wonderfully diverse place we live.
Q: For someone who has never been to a poetry slam, what should they expect? We start the night off with an open mic, followed by a feature that's guaranteed to knock your socks off, and then you'll be introduced to the competitive art of performance poetry! 8 poets will face off against each other in a three round slam. Each performer gets three minutes to present their original work on any topic, which is then scored by 5 judges on a range from 0.0 to 10.0. There are upsets and eliminations and eventually, someone takes home the fame and glory of a Wednesday night!
Q: For the super fans of slam, what events are on the calendar each month for Hear Here and are there any big shows coming up? I am SO excited about our upcoming shows! We have some great features lined up to perform that each bring a unique voice and presence to our venue! You will not want to miss ANY of these! They're dynamic performers with clear voices and I could not be happier to have them grace our space.
